A QUEST FOR TALENT THE PIANOMAN SCHOLARSHIP SERIES
Presented by International concert pianist RICHARD MEYRICK
MASTERCLASSES AND CONCERTS IN SCHOOLS Outstanding children will be awarded lessons at The Piano Studio, London
Sponsored by Mr Harvey McGrath
“Pianoman” is a FREE GIFT to schools. This unique opportunity offers selected schools a 90-minute afternoon Masterclass/Workshop with Richard Meyrick, followed by an evening solo Recital by him to raise funds for each individual school’s music department.
The Masterclass: Richard will work with up to six young pianists in a class given in the presence of other musically-minded youngsters in the schools. The schools are encouraged to invite additional players from neighbouring schools to make up the numbers where required. Richard is constantly on the look-out for children showing real (albeit undeveloped) potential from amongst the participants. These will receive all-expenses paid, free lessons with him at his acclaimed Piano Studio in the City of London.
The Evening Concert: This is a unique opportunity for young students to experience the thrill of live classical music played at close quarters by a real virtuoso internationally acclaimed concert pianist. Richard’s programmes are carefully chosen to inspire and enthral as he presents some of the world’s great musical heritage to young people, the majority of whom, he knows, will be hearing it for the first time.
Says Richard: “This, our third piano series, is a projected five-year programme beginning in April 2009. It is made possible only by the unstinting support of Mr Harvey McGrath who has shared this vision since its original concept in 1995. He has not only been a tremendous source of inspiration for the project, he is now the primary provider for so much good being given to so many young people, drawn largely from under-privileged backgrounds throughout the intervening years.”
"During the original pianoMan, which ran for five years under sponsorship from Man Group plc, I taught masterclasses at 191 schools and worked with countless gifted young pianists. It is clear that pianoMan actually helped each one and many are now on their way to Oxbridge and the major London conservatoires. Now, we want to award many more young pianists the opportunity for individual one-to-one tuition with me in London, and so, in this new Pianoman Scholarship Series, there will be an increased emphasis on talent-spotting and it is expected that more than 20 students per year will soon be receiving lessons at my Piano Studio in the City.”
“Meanwhile, I wish to express my sincere and heartfelt thanks to Harvey McGrath, not only on behalf of the hundreds of schools and thousands of pupils, but for his faith in my own chosen path during the recent years of my professional life as a musician.”
Engaging, exciting, an absolute joy
Richard is a born communicator and the huge success of Pianoman is borne out in feedback from the schools. Here is an extract of a letter from just one school in South Wales:
“Richard told stories, made us laugh, gave us lots of tips on performing and totally engaged his whole audience for almost two hours. He presented to pupils the joys and principles of performing.
“The evening concert was well attended, with many of the pupils who had attended the Masterclass returning to hear Richard play - they felt he was their friend and they really wanted to hear his performance. Pupils of all ages, from year 7-13, attended this evening which was an absolute joy. The music chosen was exciting and audience-friendly and the programme notes filled us in on the background to the pieces.
"It was so great for the pupils to hear this performance on our school piano. Most students would never have gone to a concert hall to a piano recital but because it was in school, they felt at home and were 'bowled over' by Richard's performance."!
